English Weekly CET-4 Listening Practice Test 19
Part III Listening Comprehension
Section A
Directions: In this section, you will hear 8 short conversations and 2 long conversations. At the end of each conversation, one or more questions will be asked about what was said. Both the conversation and the questions will be spoken only once. After each question there will be a pause. During the pause, you must read the four choices marked A), B), C) and D), and decide which is the best answer. Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre。
11. W: To tell the truth, I really can’t bear the way Baker dominates the conversation all the time. If he is gonna be at the party, I just won’t come。
M: I’m sorry you feel that way. My sister insists that he come。
Q: Why has Baker been invited to the party?
12. W: Here is the table for eight people. I think Jack should invite Jessica to the party, don’t you think so?
M: It’ s not our business. If Jack wanted to invite her he would have。
Q: What did the woman say about Jack?
13.W: How do you like the coat?
M: I can’t like it better! I like the solid color, it fits all kinds of people。
Q: What’s the man’s attitude about the coat?
14. W: Would you like to go to Prof. Smith’s lecture this evening?
M: No problem。
Q: What does the man mean?
15. W: A large glass of brandy may negatively affect your recovery。
M: That’s what they all say。
Q: What does the woman want the man to know?
16. M: Well, I want to be there in time to get a good seat。
W: The meeting doesn’t start for another twenty minutes。
Q: Why does the man want to be at the meeting in time?
17. M: I’d like to make two reservations on Flight 651 on November 8。
W: I’m sorry. We’ve booked up on the eighth, but we still have a few available on the ninth。
Q: When does the man want to leave?
18. M: Could you have my car ready at five o’clock please?
W: Sure. The damage is minor。
Q: Where did this conversation probably take place?
Now you’ll hear two long conversations。
Conversation One
M: Hello, can I come in?
W: Oh yes, come in. How can I help you?
M: I am looking for the Economics Office. I’ve been all over the Arts Faculty building, looking for it, but I could only find the School of Accounting and Economic History. Is this the right place?
W: Yes, this is the School of Economics。
M: Oh good. I’m a new student and I was wondering if someone could give me some information。
W: Well, I might be able to help. I lecture on that program. What do you need to know?
M: Quite a few things, actually. Firstly, how many lectures a week do I have to attend?
W: Ah, well, the Economics course is a double unit, so there are two lectures a week and one tutorial. The lectures are scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday。
M: What time?
W: Let me see… you know this information is all in the handout that you should have received yesterday at the orientation meeting。
M: Oh, was there a meeting yesterday? I didn’t know about that … no one mentioned…
W: Yes, there was, but never mind. Now, lectures are at four in the afternoon。
M: Four’s a bit late. I’ve got a part-time job that starts at four thirty。
W: Well, you can’t be in two places at once, and attendance at lectures is necessary. We expect at least 90% attendance at this university, you know。
M: 90%! That’s high. Do they enforce that rule?
W: Yes, we do. We’re pretty strict about it, actually。
M: And what times have been set down for the tutorials—do you have that information?
W: That’s a very well-attended course, so there’s a number of tutorial times. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, all at 9 o’clock. Yours will be allocated at the first lecture。
M: Can’t I choose the time?
W: Maybe not. You’ll have to talk to the lecturer on the course. Dr. Roberts is his name。
M: Oh, OK. Thanks a lot for the information. Have a nice day。
Questions 19 to 21 are based on the conversation you have just heard。
19. Why did the student miss the orientation meeting?
20. Which of the following is true about the university’s policy on students’ lecture attendance?
21. Which of the following is true of the student?
Conversation Two
M: Honey, the basketball game is about to start. Could you bring some chips and a bowl of ice cream? And... uh ... a slice of pizza from the fridge。
W: Anything else?
M: No, that’s all for now. Hey, honey, you know, they’re organizing a company basketball team, and I’m thinking about joining. What do you think?
W: Humph。
M: “Humph?” What do you mean “Humph”? I was the star player in high school。
W: Yeah, twenty-five years ago. Look, I just don’t want you to have a heart attack running up and down the court。
M: So, what are you suggesting? Should I just abandon the idea? I’m not that out of shape。
W: Well ... you ought to at least have a physical checkup before you begin. I mean, it has been at least five years since you played at all。
M: Well, okay, but ..。
W: And you need to watch your diet and cut back on the fatty foods, like ice cream. And you should try eating more fresh fruits and vegetables。
M: Yeah, you’re probably right。
W: And you should take up a little weight training to strengthen your muscles or perhaps try cycling to build up your cardiovascular system. Oh, and you need to go to bed early instead of watching TV half the night。
M: Hey, you’re starting to sound like my personal fitness instructor!
W: No, I just love you, and I want you to be around for a long, long time。
Questions 22 to 25 are based on the conversation you have just heard。
22. What does the man want to do?
23. What seems to be the woman’s major concern?
24. What is the woman’s first suggestion to her husband?
25. What can be learnt from the dialogue?
Section B
Directions: In this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D). Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre。
Passage one
The first step in stopping drug abuse is knowing why people start to use drugs. The reasons people abuse drugs are as different (as people are) from one another. But there seems to be one common threat. People seem to take drugs to change the way they feel. They want to feel better or to feel happy or to feel nothing. Sometimes they want to forget or to remember. People often feel better about themselves when they are under the influence of drugs. But the effects don’t last long. Drugs don’ t solve problems. They just postpone them. No matter how far drugs may take you, it’s always a round trip. After a while people who misuse drugs may feel worse about themselves and then they will use more and more drugs. If someone you know is using or abusing drugs, you can help. The most important part you can play is to be there. You can let your friends know that you care, you can listen and try to solve problems behind your friend’s need to use drugs. Two people together can solve a problem that seems too big for one person alone. Studies of heavy drug users in the United States show that they felt unloved and unwanted. They didn’t have close friends to talk to. When you or your friend take time to care for each other you will all help to stop drug users. After all, what are friends for?
Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you have just heard。
26. Why do some people abuse drugs?
27. According to the passage what is the best way to stop friends from abusing drugs?
28. What are the findings of the studies about heavy drug users?
Passage Two
Lions prefer to eat without having to do much work. When resting in the shade, they are also watching the sky. And if they see the birds fly down, they immediately sense that something must be happening. Even in the heat of the day, they will certainly arise and run a mile across the plains to find out what is going on. If another animal has made a kill, they will drive it off and take the dead animal for themselves. A grown lion can easily consume 60 pounds of meat at a single feeding. Often, they eat until it seems painful for them to lie down. The female lions are leaner and swifter, and as a result, are better hunters than the males. Most kills are made at night or just before dawn. The kill is the most exciting moment in the day-to-day existence of the lions, since these great beasts spend most of their time—about 20 hours a day--sleeping and resting. Lions are also social cats. And during these times of leisure, they love to romp with each other, and the young lions are always playing among themselves and with their parents。
Questions 29 to 31 are based on the passage you have just heard。
29. What do we learn about lions from what we have just heard?
30. Why do the lions watch the birds in the sky?
31. Why are the females generally better hunters than the males?
Passage Three
The Olympic Games were first held at Olympia in ancient Greece as long ago as 776 B. C. They were held once every four years. The custom lasted for more than 1, 000 years, but died out under the rulers of Rome and ceased during the decline of ancient Greek civilization. Then in 1896 the Games were revived. In that year, a Frenchman, Baron de Coubertin, decided to try to start the Games again. He wished to renew these ideals of excellence of body, mind, and spirit shown in the classic Greek Olympics. He succeeded, and the modern Olympic Games began in Athens, Greece, in 1896. Since then the Olympics have grown steadily with more and more nations and athletes taking part. Because of the world wars, they were not held in 1916, nor in 1940 and 1944. They have been regularly held ever since then。
The Olympics present the world’s most important athletic contests. Athletes from all over the world take part in the modern Olympic Games, Any nation may enter a team in the games if it agrees to follow the rules of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Athletes of many nations compete in a variety of sports divided into Winter Games and Summer Games. The Olympic Games are held each time in a different city of the world。
Questions 32to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard。
32. When were the first Olympic Games held?
33. When were the Games revived?
34. Where did the modern Olympic Games begin in 1896?
35. Why were the Games not held in 1916,nor in 1940 and 1944?
Section C
Directions: In this section, you will hear a passage three times. When the passage is read for the first time, you should listen carefully for its general idea. When the passage is read for the second time, you are required to fill in the blanks numbered from 36 to 43 with the exact words you have just heard. For blanks numbered from 44 to 46 you are required to fill in the missing information. For these blanks, you can either use the exact words you have just heard or write down the main points in your own words. Finally, when the passage is read for the third time, you should check what you have written。
George was sure that it was going to be a busy day. He was glad that his mother was living with him and Tina, his wife, so that she could take care of (36) their new baby. Tina would be busy all day in the (37) kitchen. It was a holiday and the first really warm day of spring. Many people would come over from the (38) mainland to spend the day, and it was necessary to get ready for them。
George called his (39) place of business both a restaurant and a hotel, but actually he had only four rooms to (40) rent. It was (41) located on the rocky shore of an island near the mainland of Greece. It was(42) surrounded by pine, lemon, and olive trees. In front of the restaurant was a cement (43)pier where the boats from the mainland landed. (44) People could walk to the island from the mainland if they wanted to, by crossing a long bridge three miles down the shore, but most of them came and went by boat. (45) It was faster and more comfortable. The boats were rather small,(46) but each one could carry six or eight people。

simply just trying to figure out how to begin.

Woah! I'm really enjoying the template/theme of this site. It's simple,
yet effective. A lot of times it's very hard to get that "perfect balance" between user friendliness and appearance. I must say that you've done a
very good job with this. Also, the blog loads very fast for me on Internet explorer.
